DIRECTOR: IONA MORRIS
Iona Morris is the new triple plus threat – Director, Producer, Writer, Actress and Voice Talent. As a director, Iona directed Jenifer Lewis in two of her incredible solo shows; 2012 – AN EVENING WITH JENIFER LEWIS at The Renberg Theater and in 2011 – SO MUCH LOVE! at the Nate Holden Theater. Iona also co-wrote and directed Blair Underwood’s one-man show IM4, directed and is a contributing monologist for Penny Johnson Jerald’s NOT MY CHILD, directed A HANDSOME WOMAN RETREATS starring and written by Kim Wayans, BETTER LATE THAN NEVER starring and written by Virginia Watson about her life with her father Johnnie Guitar Watson and many others. Twice, Iona directed Special Events for V-DAY SANTA MONICA. The first year, she directed VAGINA MONOLOGUES, (a one night charity event) for V-DAY at The Broad Theater. Her cast consisted of Calista Flockhart, Christine Lahti, Doris Roberts and Penny Johnson Jerald, naming just a few of the 15-member celebrity talent.
Two years later, she directed a weekend for V-DAY. The first night – she directed a fairly new work of essays Eve Ensler co-edited titled A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT AND A PRAYER also at The Broad Theater starring mostly men; Dylan McDermott, Paul Mazurski, Larry Wilmore and one of the two women in the evening’s production Garcelle Beauvais among the 9 celebrities. Chris Pierce, Singer and Guitarist weaved song and music through the piece and on the second night, she again directed VAGINA MONOLOGUES with a new cast – Barbara Bain and Hattie Winston, among them. Iona directed STILL STANDING, a hip-hop musical; taking 24 actors and crew to Switzerland, for a two-week production and directed SHEBA written by Sharleen Cooper Cohen produced in Los Angeles and at the New York Music Theater Festival. And, again, directed another production of VAGINA MONOLOGUES at the Lincoln Theater in Washington DC, starring Dawwn Lewis, Sherri Sheppard, Starr Jones, Vanessa L. Williams and a host of other leading actresses.
Iona has also Assistant Directed with Sheldon Epps, Artistic Director from the Pasadena Playhouse, on PURLIE and the Broadway bound, RAY CHARLES LIVE! She has directed, written or co-written, as well as lighting designed several benefits and special events, such as THAT’S VOICEVER! at the DGA, West, The Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP Theater Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, The L.A. Women’s Theater Festival’s Opening night gala (twice), ANSA’s (Artists for a New South Africa) benefit with Erykah Badu, Taj Majal and other well known musical artists at The Wilshire Theater, the Haiti Earthquake Charity Benefit and The Gay Iris Parker Honoring at the Pasadena Playhouse and many others.
Her art is her passion. Iona believes “The creative arts is a communication of the soul in physical form. My job is to let her live.”
